Increasing the Capacity for Love
     Brent Atkinson, PhD
To navigate a relationship skillfully, one’s brain must be wired in ways that that enable mood-regulation, self-soothing, response-flexibility, empathy and attentiveness. The neural mechanisms that enable such aptitudes cannot be willed at a moment’s notice, but hundreds of studies suggest that they can be strengthened through practice just as the mechanisms that enable complex musical or athletic movements.  In this workshop, you’ll learn how to:  1) Help clients understand that the ability to love hinges on basic aptitudes that cannot be consciously willed at a moment’s notice but can be developed over time, 2) Motivate clients to engage in exercises that cultivate the aptitudes that are needed for love, and 3) Guide clients step-by-step in implementing personalized mind/body workout routines that target specific aptitudes that need development.

Brent Atkinson, PhD, is author of Developing Habits for Relationship Success and Emotional Intelligence in Couples Therapy, and is Director of Post-Graduate Training at the Couples Clinic and Research Institute in Geneva, Illinois. His pioneering work has been featured in the Psychotherapy NetworkerOprah Magazine, and Washington Post. A personable and engaging speaker, Dr. Atkinson’s seminars are packed with cutting-edge information, practical interventions, and handouts that can be given to clients.
